課程概述

In this seminar, we will read, discuss, and evaluate recent research on a range of changes in family behaviors and household relationships from a demographic perspective. We will place particular emphasis on developing a solid understanding of trends and associated explanations as well as individual-level correlates of a variety of family behaviors. Readings are drawn not only from the demographic literature on the family but also from sociology, economics, history and human development. Seminar discussion will consider explanations and classical debates about changing family forms and family variation, as well as assess implications for empirical research and public policy. In the process of writing a research paper, you will have the opportunity to read more deeply on a substantive area of interest.

課程目標
1. Understanding major topics in the field of population studies.
2. Learning how to review assigned readings critically.
3. Completing a research paper on demographic issues.
課程要求
This class will keep you busy!
You are expected to (1) come to class prepared to discuss the required readings; (2) summarize required readings and lead discussion; (3) write and present a research paper; (4) provide feedback on a classmate’s research paper.
Each week, discussion leaders will be assigned. S/he has to provide a brief summary (1-2 pages) on readings with emphasis on concepts, theories, and research approaches and to lead class discussion. In order to have an extended discussion of required papers that everyone will have read carefully, you are asked to write one feedback (thoughts, comment, and/or questions) after each class meeting and should send it to your classmates and me before next class meeting. I will use the final minutes of class to summarize and address issues that were not covered.
We will spend the final class session presenting and discussing your research papers. As in most graduate seminars, the standard for papers is that they will eventually be submitable for review at a conference or a professional journal. Because this is no easy task, I recommend that you get started on your papers as soon as possible. Regardless, I would like to meet with everyone some time during the first few weeks of the semester to discuss what you would like to work on.
